4.) 2018 Governmental Relations Division Student Externship Program:

a. Pairs veterinary students with the AVMA GRD for a four-week program in Washington, DC. This introduces externs to public policy issues facing our profession and provides hands-on lobbying experience with legislators. Externs will also be attending congressional hearings and briefings along with meeting a wide variety of veterinarians of the federal government and nonprofit organizations.

b. Stipend: $1200 USD for 10 externs

c. Deadline: October 13, 2017

d. Note: You must have completed “two years” of vet school to apply. For us this would be 5th semesters or up, but if you have any questions email [email protected]

5.) Webinar: Practice Ownership: A Means to Control Your Destiny:

a. One hour webinar where you can expect to learn:

6.) Grants, Scholarships, Contests, and Awards:

a. Adel A. Malak Scholarship

i. The Food Safety Inspection Service of the USDA with the National Association of Federal Veterinarians has created this scholarship that provides:

1. Paid employment during school breaks as a Veterinary Student Trainee while you complete your DVM program.

2. Comprehensive mentorship and professional development program.

3. Participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan (401K plan), paid vacation time, and sick leave

ii. After completing the requirements of the program the student MUST become a full-time agency employee for at least one calendar year (12 months) for each school year that the student was covered by the scholarship.

iii. Scholarship: $15,000 USD for tuition, books, tutors, and laboratory fees for each ear in the program

b. Underserved Area Grant

i. Grants to veterinary students to reimburse their externships in underserved areas, such as RAVS trips. Externships must have occurred from January 1, 2017 to September 15, 2017. Can be used to reimburse the student for expenses directly associated with service to an underserved population such as travel, housing, and associated supplies.

ii. Stipend: one $1000 USD award, two $500 USD awards

c. Cultural and Diversity Awareness Grant

i. Support activities or experiences that will increase awareness of diversity within your student body (NOT meant to fund individual personal experiences). The event must have occurred in the past 12 months (between September 2016 – October 2017)

d. Educational Lecture Grant

i. Help defray expenses for special lectures to veterinary students/organizations on topics related to animal welfare and/or human-animal bond. May be used for speaker travel expenses but is NOT intended for funding individual students.

ii. Award: four $500 USD awards

e. AWHAB Project Grant:

i. This grant recognizes projects that meet the following criteria:

1. Present a sustainable and/or far-reaching project that demonstrates clear benefit to the humans and animals involved

2. Enhance the education of veterinary students in tangible ways

3. Provide a platform for veterinary professions to be involved meaningfully in the local community to benefit as many SAVMA members as possible.

ii. Award: four $500 USD Awards

f. Faculty Community Outreach Award

i. Intended for students to publicly acknowledge how faculty members, clinicians, and other respected individuals have gone above and beyond their own professional responsibilities and duties to interact and make a difference in the local in the local and/or global community as a servant leader.

ii. Award: $300 USD and complete funding for SAVMA Symposium 2018 where the award will be presented to them publicly.

Winning Authors will receive $125 USD

g. Wellness Support Fund

i. Offers funding to veterinary students and school organizations that wish to promote physical, mental, and emotional health at their college of veterinary medicine. Meant for assistance with projects, lectures, or events that will foster physical or mental wellness in their respective college, on a as need basis.

1. PAWS dog wash is Sunday 9 am-11 am, there is a post about it, Rachel will offer rides to people that don’t have cars that can not get there. It is a good networking event for students to go so everyone should consider going to help out!

2. Thinking about doing the can drive again since it was such a success.

1. Amber went to SCAVMA and it was very informative, will let us know pertinent information next meeting

VIII) Semester Chair Issues/Topics

Semester 1: No concerns

Semester 2: Want to do a separate log/sign out sheet of the CTF key and the van key, the lab technicians do not who has the key if it is gone.

Semester 3: Schedule is continuously changing and it is not available at this time, not happy that its changing or that the schedule did not get posted until 4pm the day before classes started.

Semester 4: AAEP has a guest lecture scheduled for September 25, asking if they can get lunch paid for.

4. There is a scholarship for three, all-expenses paid trips to the 2016 AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago from January 7-10, 2016.

6. There is a SAVMA symposium travel grant available consisting of 10 awards of $250. The application is attached and the deadline is January 22, 2016. Winners will be notified in early to mid-February 2016. a. See the attachment in the email for more information

7. SAVMA’s Education and Professional Development Committee (EPDC) is having their annual Economic Issue Essay Contest! Two $250 prizes will be awarded. The deadline is Monday, January 4th. 8. There are 5 $500 stipends offered by the Public Health and Community Outreach Committee to help SAVMA members reach out to populations that are underserved in terms of veterinary care. 10. The Public Health and Community Outreach Teaching Excellence Award nominations are happening now with a due date of December 1st. This award is meant for people who are going above and beyond to make a difference in the community. The winning nominee will get $300, funding to travel to the SAVMA Symposium in 2016, and will have the award publicly presented to them at the farewell dinner during the Symposium. 11. FOR RECENT/SOON-TO-BE GRADS: The Future Leaders Program is a one year program that enhances leadership growth. Information for the 2016-2017 program will be available this winter. 13. The National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners are offering NAVLE Self-assessments for sale. These include 200 item, web-based practice exams with retired NAVLE items, score reports available right after completion, and a projected NAVLE score. Each self-assessment is available for purchase at $50 per form. A free sample is also offered with 10 items, tutorials and answer keys. 2. Puppy day stress reliever not possible. CIHS offered that students can come socialize dogs @ their location.

3. Massages – plan for $200 a. Have yet to hear back from Eclipz to verify time and cost

1. Balance is $12,266.80 total (SAAVMA and Stipend). If you need a split let me know.

1. Have separate rooms for each class for block exams. It is disrupting students when a different class comes/goes while one is still taking exams.

1. Student Assembly on Thursday. Make sure everyone attends! a. There may be changes to NAVLE

2. Complaints about the Residence Hall

a. Dean said that there is an advisory board; the school cannot do anything unless we go through the correct channels to get to the school.

3. Gaps in the schedule

a. Shouldn’t be a problem – students should study during these scheduled breaks

4. Extra room on first floor of Leeward 1 – this will stay locked and blocked off from students and pets.

3. The Teaching Excellence Award is currently accepting nominations for outstanding teachers in our profession. The teacher that is chosen will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the 2016 SAVMA student symposium at Iowa State. The authors of the winning entry will win $125! Due date: November 30th.

There is a funding grant application with the Education and Professional Development Committee. - They are offering 4 $200 grants for funding for wet labs or lectures supplementing their college’s curriculum. Applications must be submitted by a student who is a member in good standing with SAVMA. Please limit proposals to no more than 250 words and provide all required information. Alcohol must not be provided at the events, and funding must not be used for gifts to speakers. Applications that fail to stay within these limits or fail to provide all required information will not be considered for funding at this time. Guidelines the committee will use when evaluating submissions: Uniqueness of proposed wet lab/lecture, Effective supplementation of the veterinary curriculum, Brief description of proposed event budget (ie. what the grant money will be used for), Impact the event will have on students who attend; 250 word limit - Submissions are due by Friday, November 6, 2015! Please email submissions as an attachment to [email protected] Also include your name and SAVMA ID# along with your submission. - Winners will be selected and notified in November (before Thanksgiving).

11. The next deadline for The Vet Gazette is November 15th! They’re starting a new publication called: VetFessions which is an anonymous and safe place to share what’s going on it your life. This is so we can help each other because we’re not alone in this community! Attached is the Policy Education Grant Application which is offered by SAVMA’s Governmental Affairs Committee (Side note: Anne will be deciding who gets these grants out of all of the applicants, just sayin’). The grants are up to $500 to provide funding for policy related lectures and/or events supplementing the college’s curriculum. See the attached Application for more details. Due date: November 1st EXTENDED TO NOVEMBER 15TH!

Lip Sync THIS SATURDAY - November 7th - STILL NEED @ FACUTY JUDGES - Margaritaville @7pm – 9pm - Drink prices or half price apps all night! - Default place is HRC. $5/ person unless SAAVMA thinks it should cost different. - Proceeds go into general fund/part of prizes? - Also, Cassie needs help to secure prizes. Similar to last semester, top 3 performances voted by judges, and fan favorite voted by crowd.

2. Christmas Toy Drive now until finals week – Donate 10CI toy for local kids in West Bay.

3. Ice Cream Social will be Nov. 27th.

4. The Teaching Excellence Award is currently accepting nominations for outstanding teachers in our profession. The teacher that is chosen will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the 2016 SAVMA student symposium at Iowa State. The authors of the winning entry will win $125! Due date: November 30th.

7. One of the local salons now offers corporate rates for travel massage service. I was going to inquire if we could get a deal and offer 5-10 minute massages as a fundraiser/ wellness event before blocks or finals. I will pursue if this is feasible and there is interest.


V) Treasurer Report:

1. Current SAAVMA balance is 13, 252.73 USD.

2. There is a funding request from our VBMA colleagues (President Kerry Mead) for 250.00 CI in order to assist with purchasing VBMA pins for its graduating class and current VBMA members. At several of the US veterinary schools, students that participate in the VBMA receive pins on their white coats for being a member. The SMU VBMA would like to provide our chapter the benefit of being a club member with a lapel pin. These pins would be presented to club members on the day of the white coat ceremony, and all VBMA participants would receive a pin. The SMU VBMA chapter is requesting this assistance of SAAVMA under Professional Development (#1).

Masks to donate to rescue services – Lauren Lev to speak on behalf of Dr. Roberts. - email from Dr. Roberts: Greetings SCAAVMA, At the end of last semester, I and Dr. Dunayer gave lectures/demonstrations to the Canine Officers serving with the local police and customs departments. First aid, trauma, rescue, toxins, poisonous plants and drug exposure were discussed. As a way to improve the local rescue responders ability to save pets lives and canine officers injured in the line-of-duty, I would recommend that the SMU student body (through fundraisers or other means) purchase oxygen rescue masks for first-responders. We would work with the DoA and supply sets of masks to fire departments in each district. Below are images and costs of the masks. Shipping and duty would also need to be researched and paid for. 1. SMU used to maintain an adoption page for the DOA, but it hasn't been updated since 2010. Since students are required to advertise the dogs as part of clinical skills class, this needs to be addressed.

2. We have a good design for the planners for next semester. We hope to sell them next semester.

3. Our SAAVMA chapter will be receiving about $8,000 US from AVMA. - 1. We will be implementing a way for clubs/individuals to request funding, and all request must meet the requirements.

4. Should we give the exec teams access to the SMU SAAVMA email to make things easier to send out to the school?

5. The SMU SAAMA Facebook account needs to be updated and utilized more.

6. GHLIT is giving away $300.00 to help cover the cost of rabies vaccinations for those who have not gotten their shots.

7. Can we get the photos in the school updated?

8. PLIT representative Dr. Wernett is coming down September 7th and is paying for everyone’s memberships for GHLIT.

III) Fundraising Chair 1. T-shirts are in. The time and place to pick them up will be posted on the SMU Facebook page. 2. Can the 6th and 7th semester class reps ask if their classes want an end of the semester yard sale? - They will need to decide what weekend they would like it to be (otherwise we will just choose). (I'm sure Alex can give some input here are what it was like last semester because even though it was kind of crazy (and now I know to expect this) people sold a ton of their stuff really quickly).


IV) Social Chair: 1. Great success with the Lip Sync Battle last weekend! - Those who haven't paid, please do so :-).[Everyone $5ci, (except Becky & Melissa). 2. Do we want a Movie night this semester? Should it coordinate with Marvet? (i.e. next weekend?) - Date TBD 3. Med school will confirm if volleyball is still on for Sunday--> invite MarVet? - Date TBD 4. Ice Cream social will have a date by next week. 4. V) Treasurer Report: 1. Statement: 8,560.00 USD i. No changes to report – The machines were down at the bank this morning so this is approximate. ii. The balance is a little higher since I just deposited a reimbursement to SAAVMA.


VI) Volunteer Chair Report: 1. SMU Student Dog Wash with Nutrition Club 2. Sign up sheet for emergency dog-fostering network for future floods will be on the board outside LH3. VII) Historian Chair: 1. Hana in process of updating the board.

IX) SGA Report: 1. SGA Meeting is tomorrow. 2. We will be ordering 60 agenda/planners. 3. Emily Hake has asked if SAAVMA will sponsor this upcoming MUD RUN? - It would cost $120.00 per team sponsored. - SAAVMA willing to reimburse up to $60.00 per team. - Request that Emily send Dr. Dunayer a formal request to include Moodle post and tentative number of participants. - The money goes to Charity.


X) Faculty Advisor Report: 1. Clock was put in the student lounge. 2. Response to a previous request for not mopping during day is pending.
